The fear of hurting them or disappointing them can over-ride the reality that deceitfulness will ultimately ruin the relationship. I grapple with this each time I need to broach a difficult subject with my master and it is only because I have made a vow and commitment to be honest with him that I am driven to express what I might prefer to keep hidden. One woman suddenly just got too "busy" for anything. A guy stood me up and disappeared from IM clients, later reappearing to let me know he just wasn't interested in something "serious" (which I have never given any hint of suggesting). I've awkwardly or painfully broken off things in early stages, but never by disappearing, as far as I can recall. Hmm. There is one exception, but it's not really in this domain, and it's too shameful for me to describe.
